Ingrained was co-composed by Gene Koshinski and Tim Broscious. The work is scored for txalaparta, a Basque folk instrument made up of a set of large wooden boards. This work was created as part of a larger research project, which began as a study intensive in 2024 with Basque txalaparta performers Anai Gambria Uriz and Mikel Urrutia of Hutsun Txalaparta. The title, Ingrained, references both the materials used (grain of the wood) and the txalaparta art form itself as a tradition deeply rooted in Basque culture.

Since nearly all txalaparta pieces are improvised, this composition is an exception to that practice, but it does utilize all of the same defining characteristics of the art form as well as the typical materials used in modern txalaparta performance (wood planks, wooden slap board, and large plastic barrel).

For a deeper understanding of the txalaparta tradition, please see the article the composers wrote for Percussive Notes, which is included with the score.
