"Tom-Tom for Tom" was commissioned by and dedicated to Tom Sherwood and composed as a contest piece the 2019 Modern Snare Drum Competition. The spoken rhythm of the title becomes the main musical theme heard throughout the piece (at several different rhythmic speeds) while exploring the most fundamental elements of concert snare drumming.

"Tom-Tom for Tom" is a snare drum etude written for percussionist Tom Sherwood and the 2019 Modern Snare Drum Competition. The etude is composed almost entirely from the four syllables heard when speaking the title. That four-note theme is explored in different rhythms and speeds while accompanied by metered rolls and pitch-bent interjections.
